"The Gods as We Shape Them "
April 8 September 10, 2006
LUMA Loyola University Museum of Art
820 North Michigan Avenue
Chicago, Illinois
The Gods as We Shape Them presents a representation of the breathtaking creativity seen in the gods and deities human beings shape and the diverse ways humankind chooses to protect, enhance and give meaning to our daily lives. The compelling desire to master the trials of everday life and to assert a measure of control over destiny lead us to shape our gods in ways that help us worship and appeal to them. The long history of the forms chosen tells the story of pictorial conventions and practices arrive at by group agreement in harmony with community and cultural conventions. It is the story of endlessly inventive, emotionally charged thought.
The exhibition includes over 100 objects from ancient and contemporary cultures throughout the world and include ceremonial artifacts, sculpture, textiles and everyday objects. Among the areas represented are India, China, Japan, the Pacific Islands, Asia Minor, the Middle East, Italy, France, the Iberian peninsula, the Mediterranean coast, sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas.
The exhibition is curated by Dr. May Weber of Chicago who began collecting indigenous artifacts at age 14. The art and artifacts in the exhibition are from her personal collection.
